StarBoy's Walkthrough:
(Genesis edition)
October 14th-15th, 2018Blogger's note: Hello everyone, StarBoy91 here, passionate about video games, big retrophile, and a big fan of Silicon & Synapse's The Lost Vikings. More than half a decade ago I began a walkthrough for this game not just because I wanted it to be helpful in case anyone got stuck playing it but also to show how much I love it; unfortunately I stopped my walkthrough after the tenth stage and I had not uploaded anything regarding it since, which I'm really sorry about. I suppose I underestimated the difficulty in committing to making a guide, but something happened that made me want to go back and continue.
Very recently I got hold of the Genesis version (which I played on the RetroGen) of the SNES classic which is notable for several reasons: there are two different NTSC Genesis releases of it (one published by Interplay which is the version I own, and the other by Ballistic--to be honest, I'm not sure what difference there is, if any, between the two), it can be played up to three players (with a multitap, whereas the SNES original is either one or two players), and there are five additional stages that are exclusive to this version that are not accessible in any other version of the game (including the Game Boy Advance port made a decade later) which is the primary reason I wanted to experience the Sega 16-bit version for several years.
Now I'm not entirely certain whether these five stages were conceived from the beginning or if they were simply an afterthought, but regardless they are worth the undertaking, and since they augment the total number of stages to forty-two as opposed to the thirty-seven like the original, the more the merrier I say. =) For this page I'll focus on the first exclusive stage, which in the case of the Sega edition is the penultimate segment of the Prehistoric areas, for the last stage I talked about on the SNES version was the penultimate segment of these areas there (perhaps me stopping there was a blessing in disguise?). I can't guarantee that my postings on the walkthrough (both SNES and Genesis) will be frequent but if I have the time and I'm in the mood then I'll upload a new page if I can. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding, and once again I'm really sorry that it's taken more over five years to continue. =(
Now with that out of the way, it's time to resume!
Stage 11 - TR33
Item(s) - 2 healthy fruit A, 1 red key, 1 healthy fruit B, 1 wipeout bomb, 1 yellow key, 1 steakStill outside, the Vikings are getting closer to the end of the Prehistoric area. One noticeable difference right off the bat with the Genesis version compared to the SNES classic, apart from not having as big a color palette as on the Nintendo 16-bit, is the wider resolution which expands The Lost Vikings' breathing room. Of the exclusive stages this is the shortest and the simplest of the five, but I'll still walk you through it just in case you have trouble.
Climb up the ladder as Olaf and position yourself in front of the red dinosaur with the shield in front of you so that way it'll be too distracted gnawing at his shield to notice Baleog climbing up the ladder and slaying it. It requires two hits.
Switch controls to Olaf again and stop after moving forward a little bit because there is another rampaging dinosaur charging your way, so you know what must be done! At the end of the right side above the ladder is a healthy fruit A, take it if you feel you need it.
Climb down the ladder and on the way up there'll be a rolling caveman you have to contend with, so take control as Baleog and take the caveman down. Remember: you can only damage him when he isn't rolling, and if you swing your sword while he is then he'll simply be deflected backwards.
Climb up the ladder near the end of the route and kill the rolling caveman so that he won't bother you anymore. In the same spot there is a red key; take it and climb back down. Switch to Olaf and climb the second ladder to the right and position yourself with the shield down so that the dinosaur will attempt to gnaw at you with no luck, afterward switch back to Baleog and annihilate the overgrown lizard. Now head up the ladder.
Above the ladder you'll be greeted by a rolling caveman, so take him down with extreme measures. Switch to Olaf and climb up the ladder if you haven't already and walk a little to the left to find a charging dinosaur rampaging towards you, so stop into place to let Baleog do what he's good at.
Once that's taken care of, switch to Erik and climb all the up to where Baleog and Olaf are if you haven't already. With a little traction jump up to the long platform to the left (and grab the healthy fruit B floating in midair if you need it, but if you don't then you can simply jump over it) and climb one of the two sets of ladders (doesn't matter which) so the acid-spewing snail won't get to you.
After climbing up you'll find that there is a wipeout bomb floating above the healthy fruit A to the right and the yellow key to the platform on the left. Since Erik cannot defend himself in any way, use it right off the bat so you can get the key without worrying about being eaten by the extinct reptile guarding it (or be attacked by the snail on the right side).
Go back down where you came from and run to the left until you come across a locked door with a yellow keyhole beside it, where behind it is a big steak. Insert the yellow key in the keyhole and it will open. Now Baleog and Olaf can continue forward. As Olaf climb up the ladder and position yourself facing the right with the shield down so that the snail's acid won't damage you, then have Baleog stand behind Olaf so that he'll obliterate it with his arrows.
Lead the way as Olaf and climb the ladder by the edge of the platform and walk to the right to fall into a platform slightly below you. Position yourself with the shield down as there is a snail ahead that will spew acid at you, then change to Baleog so you can end its days with a couple arrows.
Switch back to Olaf again and walk a little to the right until you'll notice a dinosaur roaming back and forth. The moment it gets closer to the left edge of its platform fall down it and walk a little to the right, and as quick as you can stop and face the left with the shield by his stead so that the dino will incessantly try to gnaw at you to no avail. Use this opportunity to take control as Baleog and wipe it out of existence once you're on the same platform as Olaf.
Drop down to the right as both Baleog and Olaf, and have Erik catch up with you by the watery gap. Insert the red key you got earlier into the red keyhole and the drawbridge will lower for you to cross so you won't fall into the water and drown. Be sure to lead the way as Olaf because, you guessed it, there is one last dinosaur remaining, so kill it as Baleog. Cross the bridge and walk towards the exit with all three Vikings, and you're done! =)
Congratulations, you survived Stage 11 (Genesis version)!!!
